AIIMS organizes workshop on “Demystifying Obstructive Sleep Apnea” in Delhi

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS, Delhi organized a workshop on Sunday on “Demystifying Obstructive Sleep Apnea.” Obstructive sleep apnea is a common but serious sleep-related breathing disorder that happens when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. It occurs when the throat muscles relax and block the airway. Symptoms of the disease include excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, and waking during the night and gasping or choking. Talking exclusively to Akashvani News, Professor and Head of the Department of Pulmonary, Critical, and Sleep Medicine Dr. Anant Mohan said, very few people are aware of the disease, but it can be fatal at times. Dr. Mohan added that the prevalence of the sleep disorder is increasing in our country.

Assistant professor of the Department of Pulmonary, Critical, and Sleep Medicine, Dr. Saurabh Mittal has said that excessive snoring is not normal, and it can increase the chance of heart and brain attack.
