AIADMK has announced a formal split from the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu. A decision to this effect was taken unanimously at the Party's district-level secretaries meeting held in Chennai on Monday. The meeting was convened by former Chief Minister and General Secretary of the Party, E.Palanisamy. According to the resolution, the AIADMK stated that it is walking out of the BJP alliance in the State as well as from the National Democratic Alliance after the State BJP top brass had been constantly citing bitter comments belittling the former stalwarts of the AIADMK. The resolution also said that the decision was taken after there was displeasure among party cadres because of the mistreatment given by the BJP.
Following the announcement of the resolution, a celebration broke out as party cadres who gathered at the Headquarters burst crackers. However, the former Chief Minister and former Organising Secretary of the AIADMK, O. Panneerselvam's faction is yet to react to the decision.
Reacting to AIADMK's decision, State BJP Chief Annamalai has said that any formal decision will be taken by the BJP National body. Speaking to reporters at Coimbatore, he said that presently he is on a yatra to strengthen the party in the State. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L.Murugan and other leaders were present along with him.
Political critics are of the opinion that the Party might change its decision when elections are nearing.
