In Cricket, Afghanistan secured a commanding 177-run victory over South Africa in the second ODI of the three-match series in Sharjah yesterday. With this win, Afghanistan has achieved a historic feat by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead, marking their first series win against South Africa. The victory was Afghanistan’s biggest win in ODIs by runs. Opting to bat, Afghanistan set a formidable target of 311 for 4 in the sweltering heat. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored his seventh ODI century while Azmatullah Omarzai added a quickfire 86 off 50 balls, leading Afghanistan to their first 300-plus score against South Africa in an ODI.
In response, South Africa’s chase began with promise, as skipper Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi put on a 73-run partnership for the opening wicket. However, the innings faltered after Bavuma’s dismissal, and South Africa was bowled out for a modest 134 runs in the 35th over. Afghanistan’s leg-spinner Rashid Khan was the standout performer, taking five wickets, while Nangeyalia Kharote claimed four. The final match of the series will be played tomorrow in Sharjah starting at 5:30 PM IST.
