Afghanistan defeats England by 8 Runs, eliminates them from ICC Champions Trophy

In the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy Cricket, Afghanistan defeated England by 8 runs at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore last night. With this defeat, the England team was eliminated from the tournament. Chasing a victory target of 326 runs set by Afghanistan, England were all out for 317 in 49.5 overs. England batter Joe Root scored a fighting 120 off 111 balls in the crucial group match. For Afghanistan, Azmatullah Omarzai picked up a five-wicket haul.

 

Earlier, electing to bat first, Afghanistan scored 325 for 7 in the stipulated ted 50 overs with opener Ibrahim Zadran recording the highest individual score of 177 off 146 balls in ICC Champions Trophy history. Zadran surpassed the previous record of 165 set by England’s Ben Duckett earlier in the same tournament. England pacer Jofra Archer claimed 3 wickets.

 

Pakistan and Bangladesh will lock horns in their last Champions Trophy group game in Rawalpindi today. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM IST.  Both teams are still searching for their first win of the tournament.
