The accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case was killed in an encounter today. According to preliminary information, the 23-year-old janitor named Akshay Shinde snatched a policeman’s pistol and shot a police officer while being taken from Taloja Jail to Badlapur for investigation. He was killed in retaliatory firing as he tried to escape from police custody. Shinde was arrested last month for allegedly abusing two minors on the school premises. The state government had formed a Special Investigation Team, which had filed two separate charge sheets last week.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde informed that the accused was killed by the police officials in self-defence. He added that assistant police inspector Nilesh More had also suffered injuries in the incident.
