The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case related to the Balasore train accident in Odisha. The investigative agency has taken over the probe into the case, earlier registered at Government Railway Police Station in Cuttack related to the accident involving two passenger and a goods train that occured last Friday, in which 288 people lost their lives. Earlier in the day, a 10-member CBI team reached the train accident site at Balasore's Bahanaga as part of its investigations into the tragedy. The CBI team, along with Central forensic officials, visited the signal room, loop line and main line at the Bahanaga railway station. The CBI took over the probe after the Railway Board recommended a CBI inquiry into the accident.
Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena today said, 205 bodies have been identified and have been handed over while 83 bodies are yet to be identified.
India and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and explore ways to further enhance the defence industrial partnership. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his German counterpart Boris Pistorius held delegation level talks in New Delhi today.
In the meeting, both the leaders discussed regional issues and shared priorities of both nations. Mr. Singh highlighted the opportunities that have opened up in the defence production sector, including the possibilities for German investments in the two Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. He stressed that India’s skilled workforce and competitive costs along with Germany’s high technologies and investment can further strengthen defence ties.
The German Federal Minister of Defence arrived in the National Capital yesterday on a four-day visit to India.
President Droupadi Murmu has said, India-Suriname bilateral relations are based on shared aspirations for development. The President was addressing a gathering at the Independence Square in Paramaribo yesterday on the occasion of the commemoration of 150 years of the arrival of Indians in Suriname.
On the concluding day of her three-day visit to the South American country today, President Murmu visited the Lallarookh Museum, dedicated to preserving the history and cultural heritage of the Hindustani population in Suriname.
Later in the day, a community reception will be hosted by the President for the Indian diaspora in Suriname, before proceeding on the second and final leg of her visit to the Serbian capital, Belgrade.
During her visit, President Murmu held delegation level talks with her Surinamese counterpart Chandrikapersad Santokhi. Following the talks, three MoUs were signed between India and Suriname. President Murmu was also conferred with the highest civilian honour of Suriname ‘Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star’ by the President of Suriname at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, BIMSTEC framework is India’s commitment to create an enabling environment for the rapid development of the region through joint endeavours in a spirit of equality and friendship. Mr Modi said this in his message on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) grouping today. Prime Minister Modi said, the current efforts to have a maritime cooperation agreement and an agreement to facilitate the movement of motor vehicles across the region reinforces the importance of the Bay of Bengal for our collective security, connectivity and prosperity.
On the BIMSTEC anniversary, leaders of the member countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen regional cooperation.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the government is embarking on a significant infrastructure development project in Nagaland. In a tweet, the Minister informed that the project involves the construction of a 25-kilometer, two-lane highway stretching from Chakabama to Zunheboto, as part of Package-3. Mr Gadkari emphasized that this initiative aims to strengthen connectivity with neighboring states in the northeast region.
In a significant step towards enhancing domestic production of pulses, the Government has removed the procurement ceilings of 40 per cent for tur, urad and masur under Price Support Scheme operations for 2023-24. The decision, in effect, assures the procurement of these pulses from farmers at MSP without ceilings.
Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi has assured that even during the coming monsoon season there will be no shortage of coal. He said, India’s coal sector is fully prepared to meet the enhanced domestic demand of our fast growing economy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Van-Dhan Yojna on 14 April 2018 in the tribal-dominated Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. The objective of this scheme is that the tribal people should not remain mere gatherers of minor forest produce like tamarind, mahua, chironji, but they should learn value addition of these forest produce and become entrepreneurs. Under this scheme, about 140 Van Dhan Kendras have been opened in Chhattisgarh and more than 3000 across the country. Through these van dhan kendras, the tribal people make value addition to minor forest produce and as a result their income has increased by three to four times. More than 55 thousand self-help groups are associated with this work across the country. Besides, the number of beneficiaries of the scheme has increased to more than 9 lakhs. More than a hundred retail-outlets have also been opened across the country to take the products made by these tribals to the people. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted a pan-India dark net drug trafficking cartel with the largest ever seizure of LSD. A synthetic chemical based-drug, Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is categorised as a hallucinogen. Briefing media in New Delhi, Deputy Director General of NCB Gyaneshwar Singh said, it is the biggest-ever drug seizure made by the anti-drugs agency in a single operation. He said, the case pertains to a pan-India network of the drug cartel where the accused were using cryptocurrency through the dark net. The darknet refers to the deep hidden internet platform that is used for narcotics sale and other illegal activities. Mr Singh said, the agency has arrested six people in two cases and seized 15 thousand blots of LSD drug. He said, it is the biggest seizure in the last two decades.
Home Minister Amit Shah has congratulated the NCB team on busting an international narcotics syndicate. In a tweet, Mr Shah said, great coordination between cyber vigilance and human intelligence has made it possible as the dark net and cryptocurrencies were used to trade these drugs.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar today emphasized that India cannot allow others to calibrate its progress based on subjective opinions. Addressing Officer Trainees of the Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES) at Upa-Rashtrapati Nivas, Mr Dhankhar urged the Officer Trainees to prioritize the nation's interests in the face of challenges and temptations.

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and Information and Broadcasting Anurag Singh Thakur has urged the youth to strive to make India a super power in the field of sports as well. Addressing a convocation ceremony of Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education in Gwalior today, the Minister said, sports has the power to transform, inspire and connect the world. In Men's Singles, Srikanth defeated Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand while Priyanshu Rajawat got the better of former World Top 10 shuttler Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan in the opening round. On the other hand, the Indian duo of Arjun and Dhruv beat France’s Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar.
