The train services have resumed on both lines after 51 hours following the Friday's accident at Balasore's Bahanaga train accident site. A goods train completed a run on the affected stretch, clearing the way for the resumption of services between Kolkata and Chennai from midnight last night. South Eastern Railway sources said long-distance trains like Howrah-Chennai Mail, Howrah-Puri Express, Howrah-Bengaluru Express, Howrah-Puducherry Express, Shalimar-Thiruvananthapuram Express passed through Bahanaga. Authorities said all trains on the route will be back to normal from today.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has congratulated all those who have worked relentlessly to restore the services. He said the investigation is going on and will go to the root cause of the accident. The Railway Minister who reviewed the restoration work at the Balasore triple train collision site yesyterday, said that the accident happened due to a change in electronic interlocking.
Chief Public Relations Officer of the East Coast Railway, Biswajit Sahu said that tracks are now fit for normal operations.
Meanwhile, Railway Ministry has recommended a CBI inquiry into Friday's tragic train accident. Talking to media in Balasore, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Railway Board has recommended a CBI inquiry to find out the root cause of the accident and persons responsible for the same.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh will hold talks with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin in New Delhi today. Mr Austin arrived in New Delhi yesterday on a two-day visit to explore ways to further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation, especially in areas of transfer of critical technologies for co-development of military hardware. Secretary Austin’s trip comes over two weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington during which the two sides are expected to unveil initiatives to expand the India-US global strategic partnership. India has been looking at manufacturing of jet engines in India under the framework of technology transfer to power its fighter aircraft.
German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi today on a four-day visit to India. During his visit, he will hold bilateral talks with Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh. In addition to the meeting with Mr. Singh, Mr. Pistorius is expected to meet with several defense start-ups during an event organized by Innovations for Defence Excellence in New Delhi.
President Droupadi Murmu will hold delegation level talks with her Suriname counterpart Chandrikapersad Santokhi. She will also participate in events commemorating the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in Suriname. Thereafter, President Murmu will pay visits to sites of historical significance and also witness the Cultural procession from the Presidential Palace.
President Murmu reached Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname late last night. She is visiting the country at the invitation of Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi. On her arrival at the Johan Adolf Pengal International Airport, President Murmu was given Guard of Honor and met the Surinamese delegation.The President is accompanied by Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Ministry of Rural development and Ms. Rama Devi, Member of Parliament, along with an official delegation. Veteran actress Sulochana Latkar popularly known as Sulochana Didi passed away in Mumbai yesterday evening. She was 94. Sulochana didi is famous for her roles as a Mother in Bollywood. She was not feeling well since last few days and was on a ventilator. Her last rites will be performed at Shivaji Park Crematorium today.
She has worked in more than 300 Hindi and Marathi Movies.
In 1999 she was honoured with Padmashree. In 2004 Sulochana was awarded with the lifetime achievement award by Filmfare.
