HOTSPOT
In today's hotspot section, we bring you a commentary on India’s New Generation Navigation Satellite.
Indiahas successfully launched its first satellite in the second-generationnavigation satellite series. The NVS-01 satellite, that lifted off on May 29, marks a significant step inadvancing India's navigation technology. It was deployed into space onboard thepowerful Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, GSLV F12, from the SatishDhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
The satellite will strengthen the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system, developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). NavIC is India's home-grown alternative to the GPS navigation system, which is of the United States.
The NVS-01 is the first in a new generation of upgraded regional navigation satellites. The NVS series of satellites will sustain and augment the NavIC with enhanced features. This series incorporates L1 band signals additionally to widen the services. It will provide accurate and real-time navigation.
According to ISRO, the L1 navigation band is popular for providing position, navigation, and timing services for civilian users and for interoperability with other Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals.
For the first time, the payload carried an indigenous Rubidium atomic clock, developed by the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad. According to ISRO, it is an important technology that only a handful of countries possess. Earlier, scientists used imported Rubidium atomic clocks to determine date and location. The satellite is powered by two solar arrays capable of generating power upto 2.4 kilowatts and a lithium-ion battery during the eclipse.
The independent stand-alone NavIC is aimed at removing dependence on foreign satellite systems for navigation service requirements, particularly for "strategic sectors".
India's 2021 satellite navigation draft policy had stated that the government will work towards "expanding the coverage from regional to global" to ensure availability of NavIC signal in any part of the world.
ISRO developed the system to meet the nation's rising need for better location, navigation, and timing, particularly with regard to the civil aviation industry and the defence sector. The network would provide real-time positioning and timing services over India and a region 1,500 km beyond the Indian boundary.
Some of the applications of NavIC include terrestrial, aerial and maritime navigation, precision agriculture, location-based services in mobile devices and marine fisheries, resource monitoring, surveying and scientific research, time distribution and synchronisation, and for dissemination of life-saving alerts. NavIC is designed with a constellation of seven satellites and a network of ground stations that operate round-the clock.
NavIC is not in wide and regular use in the country, primarily because mobile phones have not been made compatible to process its signals. India has been pressing manufacturers of smartphones to add compatibility.
The new satellite will join India’s fleet of navigation spacecraft covering the Indian subcontinent and neighbouring regions. It will augment coverage provided by global navigation satellite fleets operated by the United States, Russia, China, and Europe. The mission life of NVS-01 is expected to be more than 12 years. Earlier, this system was known as IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System).
NavIC is akin to the American GPS, the European Galileo, the Russian GLONASS and China's Beidou, and can be used to track locations.
India has over the years expanded the use of NavIC. The first of these satellites, IRNSS-1A, was launched in 2013 and the last one in 2018.
The network provides more accurate domestic navigation and its use would benefit the economy. India wants to reduce dependence on GPS. India says that NavIC is "as good as GPS of the United States in terms of position accuracy."
The Global Positioning System or GPS can guide a user within 20 meters of the location, while NavIC is more precise. It has a position accuracy of 5 to 20 meters for general users and 0.5 meters for military use. This precision is crucial for the armed forces, like in the use of guided missiles.
Following the success of NVS-01, ISRO is busy preparing the launch one of the biggest missions of the year - Chandrayaan-3, the Moon Mission -- in July. Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. The mission is aimed at demonstrating critical technologies to land the spacecraft on the south pole of the moon in less than two months.
Chandrayaan-3 would be followed by a series of critical tests for the Gaganyaan mission.
RAFALE-INDIAN OCEAN
Four Rafale fighter jets of the Indian Air Force carried out a drill in the Indian Ocean Region, in a significant demonstration of their long-range combat capabilities.
The exercise was carried out a few days ago, but the IAF shared the details on Wednesday.
The exercise is seen as important in the Indian Ocean Region. The Indian Ocean serves as a strategic bridge with the nations in India's immediate and extended maritime neighbourhood.
The national and economic interests of India are inseparably linked with the Indian Ocean.
The role of India in the region is evident in its vision of 'SAGAR ', which means ocean and stands for "Security and Growth for all in the region".
The mission lasted six hours and involved mid-air refuelling of the Rafales that have significantly boosted the capabilities of the IAF.
The Indian Air Force inducted the Rafale fighter aircraft in 2020 only a few months after the stand-off with China started and was quickly operationalised.
The Rafale is a 4.5-generation aircraft and has helped India regain its supremacy over Indian sub-continent skies with long-range air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles along with advanced radar and electronic warfare capabilities.

The price of a litre of 95 octane fuel has been increased by 20 rupees to 385 rupees while Super Diesel now costs 340 rupees with a 10 rupees increase. The price of Diesel has been kept unchanged.
