J&K-INFILTRATION
In Jammu and Kashmir, an infiltration bid by terrorists across the Line of Control in the Uri Sector of Baramulla district was foiled by the Indian Army during the Sunday morning. According to Defence Spokesperson in Srinagar, a group of armed terrorists while attempting to cross the Line of Control were engaged in an exchange of fire with the alert troops resulting in a failed attempt to intrude into Kashmir Valley. A quadcopter flown by the Pakistan Army to aid the terrorists was also spotted across the Line of Control and was fired at, causing it to withdraw. This desperate action by the terrorists, duly abetted by Pakistan Army, is yet another failed attempt to disrupt the G20 Summit and create disturbance in the Valley.
TURKIYE VOTING
In Turkiye, counting of votes is underway in presidential and parliamentary elections. Voting was held on Sunday. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's two-decade rule is facing a tough challenge from main rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who heads an alliance of six opposition parties. Kilicdaroglu, a 74-year-old former bureaucrat, has promised to fix Turkiye's faltering economy and restore democratic institutions. On the other hand, Erdogan has been extolling the virtues of his long rule, independent Foreign Policy and his efforts to bolster Turkiye’s defense industry continuously. Recently, he raised the wages of government workers by 45 per cent and lowered the retirement age.
The vote will decide not only who leads Turkiye, a NATO-member country of 85 million, but also how it is governed, where its economy is headed amid a deep cost of living crisis, and the shape of its foreign policy. In a Presidential election, a candidate must win over 50 per cent of the vote in order to be elected. Otherwise Turkiye will head to a run-off on the 28th of May.
The Parliamentary election also took place at the same time as the Presidential elections. Turkiye follows a system of proportional representation in Parliament. Parties must obtain not less than seven per cent of votes - either on their own or in alliance with other parties - in order to enter Parliament.
THAILAND-COUNTING
In Thailand, counting of votes for the general election is under way. The first unofficial results are expected. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha, the army general who led the last coup in 2014, is seeking another term. In Thailand’s bicameral system of the National Assembly, 52 million eligible voters are taking part in electing 500 members to the House of Representatives.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha is facing a strong challenge from anti-military parties. Leading the race is Pheu Thai, led by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The 36-year-old is harnessing her father's wide patronage network while sticking to the populist message for rural, low-income regions of the country.
Another party, Move Forward, led by Pita Limjaroenrat, a 42-year-old former tech executive, has also been rising fast in opinion polls. Its young, progressive, and ambitious candidates have been campaigning on a simple but powerful message: Thailand needs to change.
The election is the first since youth-led mass pro-democracy protests in 2020 and only the second since a military coup in 2014 ousted an elected government.
