Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the new International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Area Office and Innovation Centre in India. During an event in New Delhi, the Prime Minister also unveiled Bharat 6G Vision Document and launched 6G Research and Development Test Bed and Call Before U dig App.
Speaking on this occasion, the Prime Minister said, the country is marching towards the next step of digital revolution and India’s digital model is smooth, secure, transparent, trusted and tested. He said, this decade is India's tech-ade.
Highlighting the speedy expansion of the 5G services in the country, Mr. Modi said, India is among the fastest country in the world to roll out 5G services. He said, the 5G services have reached to over 125 cities and 350 districts within a short span of 120 days. He said, India is going to set up 100 5G labs in the country which will help in developing applications and technologies according to the unique need of the country. Mr. Modi said, the country is now talking about 6G services, which shows India’s confidence.
The Prime Minister said, telecom technology is not only a mode of power for the country but it is a mission to empower. He said, several steps have been taken in the last nine years to increase the speed of digital inclusion. He said, there were six crore broadband users in the country before 2014, which now reached to 80 crore. He said, the internet users were 25 crore before 2014, which now increased to 85 crores.
Mr. Modi said, reducing the regional divide is one of its priorities during the presidency of G20. He said, Global South is working towards bridging the technological divide.
Highlighting the role of Digital India initiative, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, this initiative has touched the lives of billion plus people in the country.
President Droupadi Murmu will confer the Padma Awards for the year 2023, at a Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan this evening. Of the 106 Padma awards that were announced, six are Padma Vibhushan, nine are Padma Bhushan and 91 are Padma Shri. Nineteen of the awardees are women. Oral Rehydration Solution, ORS pioneer Dilip Mahalanobis will be awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in the field of Medicine (Pediatrics). He pioneered the wide use of ORS, believed to have saved over five crore lives globally. Former Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will be awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in the field of public affairs. Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain will also be awarded the Padma Vibhushan. Those who will be honoured with Padma Bhushan include Kannada novelist and screenwriter S L Bhyrappa, Industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and Author and Philanthropist Sudha Murthy.
President Droupadi Murmu today opened the historic Rastrapathi Nilayam at Bollaram in Secunderabad for the public. The over 160 years-old heritage property has been opened for the general public on the occasion of Ugadi, the festival of Telugu new year. The quake damaged buildings, triggered landslides and sent people running into the streets last evening. According to sources, 9 people were killed in Pakistan while 4 people were killed in Afghanistan. The casualties may rise according to reports as the earthquake was felt in most parts of Afghanistan as well as large parts of Pakistan.
The affected countries include India, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. Strong tremors were felt in North India including Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

US President Joe Biden has signed a bipartisan bill that directs the federal government to declassify intelligence about the origins of Covid-19. In a statement, he said, US needs to get to the bottom of COVID-19's origins including potential links to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The legislation, which passed both the House and Senate without dissent, cites potential links between the research that was done in the Wuhan lab and the outbreak of Covid-19, which the World Health Organisation declared a pandemic on March 11th, 2020.
