Prime Minister Narendra Modi Mr Modi expressed confidence that the Shree Anna will benefit the country's 2.5 crore marginal farmers by strengthening the rural economy through its market and associated ecosystem. Speaking after inaugurating the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference held in New Delhi today, he underlined that the climate-resilient quality of millet can help in fighting problems related to the water crisis.
The Prime Minister expressed his pride at the United Nations declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets after India's proposal and efforts. Prime Minister stressed the need for developing a stable mechanism for sharing agricultural practices of millet cultivation among friendly countries. He said, with this mechanism, there is a possibility of developing a supply chain that can promote millet from field to market effectively.
Mr Modi informed that the contribution of Millet to the national food basket is a mere five to six per cent and urged scientists involved in research and all stakeholders to contribute to increasing this percentage.
Highlighting the benefits of millet, Mr Modi said that it guarantees the good health of humans and soil as it requires less water and no chemical fertilisers.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister unveiled a customised postal stamp and currency coin on the International Year of Millets.
Our Correspondent reports that several agriculture ministers of foreign countries, scientists and other stakeholders are participating in the two-day conference to deliberate on the promotion and awareness of millets among producers, consumers and other stakeholders; millets’ value chain development; health and nutritional aspects of millets and market linkages.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina, will inaugurate the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline via video-conference today.
This is the first cross border energy pipeline between India and Bangladesh, built at an estimated cost of 377 crore rupees. Out of this, the Bangladesh portion of the pipeline, built at a cost of approximately 285 crore rupees, has been borne by the Government of India under grant assistance.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said by the year 2033, India’s share in the global dairy sector is all set to increase up to 33 per cent.
Mr Shah was addressing the concluding session of the 49th Dairy Industries Conference at Gandhinagar today.
Mr Shah said the Government is planning to establish two lakh Rural dairies at the Panchayat level across the country which will help increase the annual growth rate of the Indian dairy Sector from the current 6.6 per cent to 13.80 per cent.
The Minister also presented the Verghese Kurien award to dairy industrialists and leaders for their notable contributions.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the State government is encouraging value addition in the dairy sector.
A large number of Dairy industrialists, cattle-rearing farmers, and cooperative leaders participated in the three-day conference.
The second meeting of the Startup-20 engagement group, which has been newly formed under India’s G-20 Presidency, has begun in Gangtok, Sikkim. The two day meeting aims to bring together global startup systems while ensuring that every nation has the freedom to grow its unique ecosystem.
Addressing the inaugural session, Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang said, Startup-20 is the perfect opportunity for bringing together and synergising key stakeholders in a world that needs innovation, digitisation, dynamic energy and technology breakthroughs.
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash, who was also present on the occasion, reiterated the central government’s commitment to strengthen the North East, including the region’s startup ecosystem. More from our correspondent:

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of 100 crore rupees on the Kochi Municipal Corporation for continuing to neglect its responsibilities which resulted in a fire at a Brahmapuram waste plant site in Kochi, Kerala. The Bench headed by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel awarded 100 crore rupees in environmental compensation against the Kochi civic body. The tribunal also directed the civic body to address the health issues faced by the people after the waste plant fire.
Following the fire at the waste dump site on 2nd of this month which led to a crisis situation, the matter also reached Kerala High Court. The Court observed that all the rules of solid waste management were violated at the Brahmapuram waste plant.
A rescue operation was launched after the fire and a warning was issued to the residents to stay indoors. Hospitals were asked to prepare emergency admission to deal with severe air pollution and its worrying public health fallout.
President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Kanyakumari from Thiruvananthapuram on a day's visit. The President visited the Vivekananda Memorial Hall and meditated at its Meditation Hall. Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi and state's Minister for Technology Mano Thangaraj were also present with the President.
Later, President Murmu visited the Ramayana exhibition hall and also offered prayers at the Bharat Mata temple.
The President will leave for Lakshadweep later. Tomorrow, she will interact with Self-Help Groups at Kavaratti and will proceed to Bangaram Island. The President is on a six-day tour of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep.

The US has resumed the flights of surveillance drone over the Black Sea region days after a Russian fighter jet intercepted one such drone. The incident took place on last Tuesday leading to the downing of the surveillance drone. Two American officials said yesterday that an RQ-4 Global Hawk flew a mission to the region yesterday. Pentagon officials have been reiterating that the incident would not stop Washington from flying such missions.
Several parts of Delhi-NCR received light rain in the wee hours today, bringing much needed respite from the humid weather. The National Capital also witnessed cloudy skies and chilly winds.
