Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advised students to observe digital fasting once a week to minimize distractions. Interacting with students, parents and teachers during the 6th edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha programme in New Delhi today, he expressed concern over the use of gadgets, saying that people in India spend an average of six hours on screen. He said, a 'No Technology Zone' must be created at home.
The Prime Minister asked teachers to develop a strong bond with students. He said, if a student asks questions, it means he or she is curious, and teachers should always try to promote their curiosity.

AIR News spoke to some of the students who participated in the Pariksha Pe Charcha programme today. The students shared their experiences and the advice they got from the Prime Minister.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar today called upon the youth to practise and follow Fundamental Duties enshrined in the Constitution, while exercising their Fundamental Rights. Expressing concern over the challenge of climate change, he said this critical issue can also be addressed effectively by taking fundamental duties towards the environment seriously. Interacting with the volunteers of the National Service Scheme contingent which took part in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi, Mr Dhankhar lauded them for equal participation of boys and girls. The Vice President encouraged them to become catalysts of change.
RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das today said that despite a hostile and uncertain international environment, India’s economy continues to remain resilient, drawing strength from its macroeconomic fundamentals. He was addressing the 22nd Fixed Income Money Market and Derivatives Association and Primary Dealers Association of India Annual Conference in Dubai. Mr. Das said India’s financial system remains robust and stable, with bank credit growing in double digits. Admitting that inflation has remained elevated, the RBI Governor, however, added that there has been a welcome softening during November and December last year.
Talking about the Current Account Deficit, Mr. Das said it is eminently manageable. He added that the average Current Account Deficit to GDP ratio stood at 3.3 percent during the first half of FY23. The RBI Governor said net FDI flows remain strong and foreign portfolio flows have resumed since July 2022. He informed that the size of forex reserves is comfortable while the country’s external debt ratios are low by international standards.
On rupee depreciation, Mr. Das said the currency fell seven percent against the US dollar during the initial pandemic days and nine percent between February and November last year in view of the Ukraine war. He, however, added that the rupee outperformed the currencies of most advanced and many emerging market economies.
India and South Africa today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce 12 African Cheetahs annually over the next eight to ten years. An initial batch of 12 cheetahs will be flown from South Africa to India next month. The cats will join eight Cheetahs brought to India from Namibia last year.
The initiative to reintroduce cheetah to a former range state is being carried out following the local extinction of this iconic species due to over hunting and loss of habitat in the last century. The terms of the MoU will be reviewed every five years to ensure it remains relevant.
Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav termed the initiative as an encouraging development for Project Cheetah and a matter of pride for nature lovers. In a tweet, he said, restoring cheetahs is a priority for the government, with far-reaching conservation consequences. The Minister said, India looks forward to welcoming the cheetahs from South Africa.
The SCO Film Festival 2023 opened in a glittering ceremony in Mumbai this evening. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, and Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi, inaugurated the festival.
Addressing the gathering, the I&B Minister said the government aims to make India a content and post production hub. He said it has launched incentive schemes to enable shooting of foreign films in India and for co-production of audio-visual content. Mr. Thakur said the government is keen to develop the country as the world’s choice to shoot its content and also for post production of films.
Stating that the SCO region represents 40 percent of the world population and 30 percent of global GDP, Mr. Thakur said this festival provides an incredible opportunity to forge cinematic partnership between the countries of this region.
The festival will see the largest ever participation, with 58 movies from 14 countries being screened. It will continue till the 31st of January.
The BJP Central Election Committee met at the party headquarters in New Delhi today to finalise the names of candidates for the ensuing Assembly elections in Tripura. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President J P Nadda, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Sarbananda Sonowal were among those who attended the meeting . Assembly Elections in Tripura will be held on the 16th of February. Counting of votes will take place on the 2nd of March.
CPI(M) MLA from Tripura Moboshar Ali and former Congress MLA Subal Bhowmik joined the BJP in New Delhi this evening. They joined the BJP in presence of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, State In-Charge Dr Mahesh Sharma and other party leaders.
The BJP today accused the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi of levelling baseless allegations on security agencies and Jammu and Kashmir police on the issue of security lapses during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Addressing media in New Delhi, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that Jammu and Kashmir Police through its twitter handle has clarified that there was no security lapse during the Yatra. Mr Bhatia said that it seems that petty politics is being done on the issue.
The Supreme Court of Nepal has annulled the status of Ravi Lamichhane as a member of parliament, citing that the citizenship he had to contest the election was not valid. He held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of Nepal. A constitutional bench led by Acting Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki issued the verdict today.
The verdict reads that Lamichhane was not qualified to contest the House of Representatives election as he did not take initiative to obtain Nepali citizenship after renouncing his American citizenship.
As Lamichhane has been removed from the House, he will also lose the position of the Deputy Prime Minister unless he gets citizenship. Ravi Lamichhane was a journalist turned politician who founded the Rashtriya Swatantra Party and was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2022 general election.
Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that he will fully implement the thirteenth amendment to the constitution aimed at giving more autonomy to provinces. The amendment was incorporated in 1987 and has not been fully implemented especially in terms of police and land powers.
A statement from the President's media division issued after the all party meeting said that he was not for a federal solution but favoured power sharing. He further said that the 13th Amendment is being implemented as per the Supreme Court’s directions.

On to sports now, in Women's Under-19 T20 Cricket World Cup, India advanced to the final at Potchefstroom in South Africa today. India beat New Zealand by 8 wickets in the semifinal in South Africa this evening. After restricting New Zealand to just 107 for 9 in 20 overs, India achieved the target of 108 runs in just 14.2 overs after losing two wickets. Shweta Sehrawat scored unbeaten 61 off 45 balls.
In the second semifinal, England defeated Australia by 3 runs . Chasing a target of 100 runs, Australia were bundled out for 96 runs in 18.4 overs. Earlier, England were all out for 99 in 19.5 overs after electing to bat first.
India will now clash with England in the final on Sunday.
In the FIH Hockey World Cup, Germany entered the final beating Australia 4-3 at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar. In the other semifinal match, Belgium beat Netherlands 3-2 and reached the finals. The final match will be played on Sunday.
In Men's Cricket, New Zealand have set a victory target of 177 runs for India in the first T20 International of the three-match series at JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. In reply, India were 27 for three in 4.3 overs, when reports last came in. New Zealand scored 176 for 6 wickets in stipulated 20 overs. For visitors, Daryl Mitchell was the highest scorer who was not out at 59 off 30 balls. Earlier, India won the toss and opted to field.
In the Australian Open Tennis, fourth seed Novak Djokovic will take on third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Men's Singles title clash on Sunday. Djokovic of Serbia defeated unseeded American player Tommy Paul in the last four encounter 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 today. Djokovic seeks a record-extending 10th Australian Open and a 22nd Grand Slam crown.
