President Droupadi Murmu has said that the world has started to look at India with a new sense of respect and this has created new opportunities and responsibilities. The President was addressing the Nation on the eve of the 74th Republic Day today. On this occasion, she extended her greetings to the people of India and Indians abroad by saying that from the day the Constitution came into effect to the present day, it has been an amazing journey that has inspired many other nations.
On India’s growing stature on the world stage, President Murmu said, India’s interventions at various world forums have started making a positive difference. She said, India’s G-20 presidency is an opportunity to promote democracy and multilateralism for shaping a better world and a better future.
Drawing attention to the challenges of global warming and climate change, the President emphasised on developing and popularising alternative sources of energy while stressing the need for emerging economies to get the support of advanced nations in terms of financial support to effectively deal with the climate change crisis.
The President also emphasised the need to maintain a balance between development and the environment by reconsidering the basic priorities.
On the International Year of Millets, the President said, millets were essential ingredients of people's diet earlier and now the adoption of millets in the diet will help in conserving ecology and health.
Appreciating the initiatives taken in recent years by the Government to transform governance, and the lives of people and achieve the Mission of Sarvodaya, the President said, great strides have been made on the economic, education, digital and technological fronts.
The President said, India has now become the fifth-largest economy in the world despite the economic uncertainties, global headwinds and challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.
The President observed that the progress made by India in the sphere of women’s empowerment and gender equality is evident in the growing participation and rising stature of women in every sector.
Terming India home to one of the oldest living civilisations and the mother of democracy, the President claimed that tiding over the countless challenges and adversities of the earliest days of Independence, India has succeeded as a democratic republic because of so many creeds and so many languages have not divided us but they united us. Reminding the nation that the Constitution which governs the Republic was the outcome of the freedom struggle, the President recalled that during the freedom struggle, revolutionaries and reformers had joined hands with visionaries and idealists to help us learn about our age-old values of peace, brotherhood and equality. Lauding the role of Constitution makers, the President said, the nation will always remain grateful to Dr. BR Ambedkar, Jurist BN Rau, experts and officers who helped in making the Constitution. She said, their vision, as enshrined in the Constitution, has been continuously guiding India and now the country has transformed from a largely poor and illiterate nation to a confident nation marching on the world stage.
The Nation will celebrate its 74th Republic Day tomorrow. President Droupadi Murmu will lead the nation in celebrating Republic Day from Kartavya Path in New Delhi. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will be the Chief Guest at the parade. During the parade, the country's military prowess, cultural diversity, self-reliance initiatives, women empowerment and emergence of a ‘New India’ will be showcased.
The parade ceremony will commence with the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the National War Memorial. The parade will begin at 10:30 AM from Vijay Chowk and head towards Lal Quila.
For the first time, an Egyptian Military contingent will take part in the Republic Day parade.
On the eve of Republic Day, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has conveyed his greetings and best wishes to all citizens. In a message, Mr Dhankar said, Republic Day provides an opportunity to all citizens to reaffirm their faith in the age-old civilisational values enshrined in the Indian Constitution. He said, it is also a solemn occasion to recall the contribution of all the freedom fighters, great thinkers and unsung heroes whose sacrifice has laid the foundation for our Republic as we know it today.
A total of 901 Police personnel have been awarded Police Medals on the occasion of the Republic Day, 2023. Police Medal for Gallantry has been awarded to 140, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service to 93 and Police Medal for Meritorious Service has been awarded to 668 Police personnel.
The Union Home Ministry said, among the majority of the 140 Gallantry Awards, 80 personnel from Left Wing Extremism affected areas and 45 personnel from Jammu and Kashmir region are being awarded. Among the personnel receiving Gallantry Awards, 48 are from CRPF, 31 are from Maharashtra, 25 are from Jammu and Kashmir Police, nine from Jharkhand, seven each from Delhi, Chhattisgarh and BSF and remaining from other States and Union Territories.
President’s Medals have been awarded to Fire Service, Home Guards and Civil Defence personnel on the occasion of Republic Day this year. 47 personnel have received Fire Service Medals.
55 personnel were awarded Home Guard and Civil Defence Medals.
The President has approved the conferment of the Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards - 2022 on 43 persons. This include Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to seven, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to eight and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 28 persons. Four persons have been awarded posthumously.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the new opportunities available to the youth in the country are unprecedented. He was interacting with NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and performers in New Delhi today who are a part of this year's Republic Day programme. Mr Modi said NCC and NSS are organizations that connect the young generation with national goals and national concerns.
The Prime Minister said today, the country is running campaigns like Start Up India, Make in India, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He said India is working towards meeting global demands.
India and Egypt today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate content exchange, capacity building, and Co-Productions between Prasar Bharati and the National Media Authority of Egypt. The MoU was signed by I&B Minister Anurag Singh Thakur and Egypt's Foreign Minister, Sameh Hassan Shoukry.
The MoU was exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in New Delhi.
The MOU is part of the efforts by Prasar Bharati to expand the reach of DD India Channel to showcase the country’s progress through programmes focusing on the economy, technology, social development and also the rich cultural heritage.
President Droupadi Murmu today said that young voters have the responsibility to raise awareness of the democratic process in the country. Speaking at the 13th National Voter's Day 2023, organised by the Election Commission of India in New Delhi today, the President said, young voters are now actively participating in the election processes which is a good sign for democracy. She said, the number of women voters has increased which is a great achievement, especially for Indian democracy.
President Droupadi Murmu handed over "Voter Cards" to five youngsters who are going to vote for the first time.
During the event, the President distributed National Awards for the Best Electoral Practices to State and District level officers.
The President awarded the National Media Award to All India Radio News in the electronic media category for carrying out an outstanding campaign for voters’ awareness and education.
The Election Commission has decided to revise the date of the poll for bye-elections to the Chinchwad and Kasba Peth Assembly Constituencies of Maharashtra. The date of the Poll has now been revised to the 26th of February, a day ahead of the previous date of 27th February. The Commission took the decision as the previous date clashed with the 12th Standard HSC exam and graduate degree exam to be conducted at various Polling Stations.
Pakistan is considering slashing the salaries of government employees by 10 per cent across the board, amid a deepening economic crisis in the cash-strapped country. Pakistan is grappling with one of the country's worst economic crises in recent years amid dwindling foreign exchange reserves. According to media reports, the National Austerity Committee constituted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also considering cutting down expenditures of ministries by 15 per cent, reducing the number of federal Ministers, Ministers of State, and advisers.
