India will observe Parakram Diwas on Monday to mark the 126th Birth anniversary of country's great freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. On the occasion, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi will name 21 unnamed islands of Andaman and Nicobar after country's highest gallantry award winners through video conferencing. During the programme, Mr Modi will also unveil the model of the National Memorial dedicated to Netaji to be built on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep. The Government of India had declared the 23rd of January as Parakram Diwas to celebrate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. This step will be an everlasting tribute to the country's heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.

India's President Droupadi Murmu will confer bravery award on 11 children at a ceremony in New Delhi on Monday. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with awardee children on Tuesday. Government confers the bravery awards on children for their exceptional achievements. The awards are conferred upon children in the age group of five to 18 years, for their excellence in six categories.
REPUBLIC-NARI SHAKTI
India will celebrate its 74th Republic Day on the 26th of January. Display of the growing stature of women in the armed forces will be one of the key highlights of the Republic Day parade this year. The Indian Navy and Indian Air Force marching contingent will be led by women officers during the parade. The Indian Air Force marching contingent will be led by Squadron Leader Sindhu Reddy. Talking to AIR News, Sindu Reddy said, leading the marching contingent on the Kartya Path is really a proud moment for her. Similarly, Indian Air Force, an Indian Navy marching contingent of 144 young sailors will also be led by a women officer Lieutenant Commander Disha Amrith. Talking to AIR News, Disha Amrith said, leading the marching contingent of the Indian Navy is a lifetime opportunity and it was her childhood dream.
REPUBLIC DAY-TABLEAUX
Twenty-three tableaux from 17 States and Union Territories and six from various Ministries and Departments will participate in India's Republic Day Parade this year at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. These tableaux will depict the nation’s rich cultural heritage, economic and social progress and strong internal and external security. The themes of this year's tableaux are mostly based on women empowerment.
EGYPT PREZ-VISIT INDIA
President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, will pay a state visit to India from the 24th to the 26th of this month. President El-Sisi will be the Chief Guest at India’s 74th Republic Day. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including five Ministers and senior officials. This is for the first time that the President of Egypt has been invited as Chief Guest at India's Republic Day celebrations. A military contingent from the Egyptian Army will also participate in the Republic Day parade. India and Egypt are celebrating 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
PM-DGP CONFERENCE
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has suggested making the police forces more sensitive and training them in emerging technologies. Mr Modi emphasised on the importance of National Data Governance Framework for smoothening of data exchange across agencies. He stated this while attending the last two day of the three day 57th All-India Conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of Police in New Delhi. The Indian Prime Minister suggested that while there should be further leverage of technological solutions like biometrics and others there is also a need to further strengthen traditional policing mechanisms like foot patrols. During the conference, Prime Minister Modi also discussed strengthening of border as well as coastal security by organising frequent visits of officials. The three day Conference covered various aspects of policing and national security, including Counter Terrorism, Counter Insurgency and Cyber Security.
VAGIR -SUBMARINE
The Indian Navy is set to commission the fifth Kalvari class submarine Vagir on Monday. The submarine, built in India by Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in collaboration with France-based Naval Group, will be commissioned by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar.
G20 Weekly roundup
India's G20 Presidency is witnessing a series of deliberations and related events across the country. Ahmedabad is hosting B20 inception meeting from Monday while Chandigarh and Chennai are gearing up for other key meets next week. This week the cities in focus were, Bhopal, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram. The first G20 Infrastructure Working Group meeting was held from 16th to 17th of January in Pune while the first G20 Health Working Group meeting took place in Thiruvananthapuram from 18th to 20th of this month. In keeping with the theme of One Earth, One Family, One Future, participants deliberated upon global cooperation to tackle the issues related to urban infrastructure and healthcare. We take a close look at G20 Events in India this week.
The first G20 Infrastructure Working Group meeting under India’s G20 Presidency was held in Pune from 16th to 17th January. The meeting was hosted by the Department of Economic Affairs under the Union Ministry of Finance. India is the chair while Australia and Brazil are the co-chairs. 64 delegates from 18 countries, 8 invited nations and 8 international organizations attended the meeting. The G20 Infrastructure Working Group discussed the 2023 Infrastructure Agenda under the Indian G20 Presidency. In this two-day meeting, the flagship theme of “Financing Cities of Tomorrow- Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable”, was discussed. The Workshop also discussed how cities and governments could prepare themselves to increase private financing for Cities of Tomorrow. The foreign delegates also experienced the rich cuisine, history and culture of Pune.
A two-day long Think -20 meeting was held in Bhopal during January 16-17. The theme was- Global Good Governance with environment friendly lifestyle, moral values and auspiciousness. The participants deliberated upon a range of subjects such as trade, triangular cooperation, climate change and environment. Financing, sustainable development goals, inclusive model of development, changing geo-political scenario were among other key areas. Think 20 participants made key recommendations as Bhopal Declaration. These include the need for development transformation to support transitions towards ‘Global South and Global Governance for LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), and responsible consumption.
The other major event of the week was first G20 Health Working Group meeting at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala from 18th to 20th January. India's Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar inaugurated the three-day event. She said pandemic policy must be a defining part of our health policy. The Minister said that the learnings must form the agenda for our preparedness and response together as Covid-19 will not be the last pandemic.In his keynote address, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan highlighted India’s strong culture of medical practices and innovation. The meeting focussed on three main priorities - health emergencies prevention, preparedness and response; strengthening cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector, and digital health innovations to aid universal health coverage. Day one of the G20 Health Working Group meeting saw discussions on ways to tackle the urgent challenges in the health sector mainly by microbial resistance. The participants took stock of cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector and provision of safe and low-cost healthcare systems. On the second day, discussions were held on digital health innovations to aid universal health coverage. Solutions to urgent challenges in the health sector and international cooperation in the field of pharmaceuticals and the digital health were among other key areas.
Union Minister of State for Health Bharti Praveen Pawar emphasized that India's aim during the G-20 presidency is to focus on value-based healthcare and Universal Health Coverage . She was speaking at the inaugural session on Medical Value Travel on the sidelines of the 1st Health Working Group meeting in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on Thursday.

A Workshop on G-20 Environment and Climate Sustainability was held in Bengaluru on Friday. The participants include the Forest departments of all the states, associated international organisations, Knowledge partners, local influential persons, media and community representatives. The event comes ahead of the first meeting of the G-20 Working Group on Environment and Climate Sustainability in Bengaluru from the 9th to the 11th February. The G-20 Working Group will focus on promotion of blue economy along with coastal sustainability, restoration of degraded lands and ecosystems. The enhancement of biodiversity and strengthening of circular economy are other key issues on the agenda.
Indian State of Uttar Pradesh is gearing up for the upcoming G20 meetings in the the state. A G-20 walkathon was organized in Lucknow, Agra, Varanasi and NOIDA on Saturday morning. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the Run in Lucknow while other senior Ministers were present in the walkathon organised in Agra, Noida and Varanasi. Youth, NCC cadets, senior citizens and students took part in large numbers in the walkathon held in the four cities.
The inaugural ceremony of the B20 inception meeting as a part of India's G20 Presidency will be held in Gandhinagar on Monday. The meeting will be attended by India's Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Ashwini Vaishnaw, state Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, India's Sherpa to G-20 Amitabh Kant and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran and host of national and international business leaders. This is the first of 15 events to be held in Gujarat as part of India's G-20 presidency. The B 20 inception meeting will deliberate on various global issues ranging from climate change, innovation, global digital cooperation and resilient global value chains. The meeting will take place under the theme of 'RAISE,' which stands for Responsible, Accelerated, Innovative, Sustainable and Equitable Businesses. Ahead of formal inaguration of B 20 meet in Gandhinagar, G 20 delegation on Sunday visited Dandi Kutir museum in Gandhinagar and took the glimpse of Mahatma Gandhi's life journey and principles. On reaching Gandhinagar, the delegation was welcomed in traditionally. Nearly 600 delegates including the 200 international delegates are taking part in the B 20 India meet. The cultural bonanza was organized on Sunday where delegates witnessed Gujarat’s traditional dance forms such as Garba, Dangi tribal dance and Mishra Ras.

NEW ZEALAND-PM
New Zealand's ruling Labour Party has selected Chris Hipkins to replace Jacinda Ardern as the party leader and the 41st Prime Minister of the country. After the surprise resignation of Ms Arden on Thursday, Mr Hipkins was the only nomination for the job and his confirmation in a party meeting, knoas the Labour caucus, was largely a formality. He will be sworn in as the Prime Minister on Wednesday.
FRANCE-GERMANY TIES
French President Emmanuel Macron has said that France and Germany should be pioneers in the process of developing Europe. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met French counterpart in Paris on Sunday to mark 60 years of post-war cooperation between both nations-the signing of Elysee Treaty. Top French and German officials met in Paris to pay tribute to the historic treaty. In his speech, President Macron said, Germany and France must become pioneers to relaunch Europe because they have cleared the path to reconciliation. Mr Macron stressed the need to build a new energy model and encourage innovation and the technologies of tomorrow. He also talked about ensuring that the European Union remains a geopolitical power in its oright, in defence, space and diplomacy.
In his address, the German Chancellor said, the cooperation between France and Germany was key to Europe's future.
ISRAEL MINISTER-SACK
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed key ally Aryeh Deri from all ministerial posts on Sunday. Prime Minister took the decision following an Israeli High Court ruling against appointing the Shas Party leader to posts in government due to his conviction last year over tax offences. The court ruling came as Israel is mired in a dispute over the power of the judiciary.
CALIFORNIA-SHOOTING
In the United States, at least ten people were killed and several other injured in a mass shooting in the city of Monterey Park in California on Saturday night. Media reports said, the shooting occurred at a dance club during Chinese Lunar New Year celebration. Thousands of people had gathered for the start of a two-day festival, one of the largest Lunar New Year events in the region. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a statement said, Homicide detectives are responding to assist Monterey Park Police Department with the investigation. The department said the suspect was male, who is currently absconding.
CHINA COVID
In China, eighty per cent of the population have been infected by COVID outbreak, hence the possibility of a big COVID-19 rebound in China over the next two or three months is remote. This was claimed by Chief epidemiologist, Wu Zunyou, at the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, on Weibo social media platform.

Thai shuttler Kunlavut Vitidsarn has won the Men's Singles title of India Open Badminton championship. He defeated World No. 1 Denmark's Viktor Axelsen the final 22-20, 10-21 and 21-12 in New Delhi on Sunday. Korean sensation An Seyoung won Women's singles final. She beat World No.1 Japanese Akane Yamaguchi.

In Australian Open Tennis, World Number one, Iga Swiatek crashed out of the Women's singles after suffering a loss to Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the fourth round on Sunday. Third seed American Jessica Pegula also entered the Last eight after overpowering 20th seed Barbora Krejčíková of Czeh Republic at John Cain Arena. In Men's Singles, unseeded Jiri Lehecka, third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, 18th seed Karen Khachanov and 29th seed Sebastian Korda moved to the quaterfinals.
FIH MEN's HOCKEY
In the Hockey World Cup, New Zealand eneterd the quaterfinals after defeating India in a penalty shootout in the crossover match at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar on Sunday. Earlier, Spain defeated Malaysia 4-3 in the penalty shootout in the first crossover match of the tournament at the same venue. Spain will lock horns with three-time champion Australia in the quarterfinals. Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands and England have already entered the quarterfinals.

Two Indian films bagged awards for the best script writer and best actress in the Asian Film Competition section at the 21st Dhaka International Film Festival which concluded on Sunday. Anik Dutta directed film Aparajito (The Undefeated) got the best scriptwriting award while Ketaki Narayan was judged the best actress for her role in Krishnendu Kalesh directed film Prappeda (Hawk’s Muffin).
