JAISHANKAR-MILLETS
India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has said that Millets have an increasing relevance in the world today in the backdrop of COVID, climate change and conflicts. He was speaking at the pre-launch of India's year-long grand celebration of ‘International Year of Millets 2023" in New Delhi on Thursday. Dr Jaishankar stressed that millets are important for food security as well as international relations.
The External Affairs Minister said COVID was a period that reminded the world what a pandemic could do to food security. He said climate changes can lower production and disrupt trade. He suggested that in international relations, much greater attention ought to be given to food security.
In his address, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, the International Year of Millets will raise awareness about the importance of millets in food security and nutrition. He said India is one of the major producers of millets. He added that millets are a climate-friendly crop which can even be grown in drought-hit areas. Mr Tomar said his Ministry is working in a mission mode to increase millets consumption and production.
High Commissioners and Ambassadors to India from over 60 countries attended the pre-launch celebration. Millets contain substantially high amount of proteins, fibre and minerals, in comparison to fine cereals like rice and wheat. Jowar, Bajra, Ragi, Foxtail millet, buckwheat and amaranthus are some of the examples of millets. These contain many health benefits as they are gluten free and non allergic. Millets reduce Anemia, liver disorder and Asthma. Their high dietary fibre provides hunger satisfaction and helps reduce obesity and the risk of Type II Diabetes. Millets are grown in 131 countries, and are a traditional food for 59 crore people in Asia and Africa. Millets are growing in popularity as a super food in the world. G-20 -SUGGESTIONS

AMITABH-CIRCULAR ECONOMY
India's G-20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant has said that the circular economy agenda will be given thrust during the country's G-20 presidency. Addressing the 6th edition of FICCI Circular Economy Symposium 2022, Mr. Kant said, transitioning to a fully circular economy will require urgent and large-scale action from all parts of society. He said a circular economy is necessary for climate change and a huge amount of cross-sectoral collaboration is critical to facilitate a circular economy. Emphasizing on Sustainable Development Goals, he said, India looks at alternative paradigms of production and consumption to achieve sustainable material and wellbeing of society.
Speaking at the 9th Official SBI Banking & Economics Conclave on G20, Mr. Kant highlighted the role of banks in an uncertain macro environment and how Tech will solve for the future. He said, banks must look at alternate models of lending and leverage available data to widen India’s access to credit.
MEA-BRIEFING
India has rejected observations of US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Briefing media in New Delhi on Thursday, External Affairs' Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the observations in USCIRF report on religious freedom in India are biased and inaccurate. [ - -MEA US CIRF - ]
Mr Bagchi said that India has rescued over 200 people who were trapped in the fake job rackets in Myanmar. He said, out of 200 people, 153 people have already been repatriated to India and the remaining 50 people are in process of repatriation. More than 108 people have been repatriated to India from Cambodia. Indian government has requested the Myanmar and Thailand authorities to facilitate the repatriation process. Mr. Bagchi cautioned that visa on arrival facility is only for the tourists not for job seekers.
On the issue of Indian fugitive Zakir Naik's presence at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Mr. Bagchi said, the issue of Zakir Naik has been raised with Qatar.

AGNI-3 MISSILE
India carried out a successful training launch of an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-3 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha on Wednesday. The successful test was part of routine user training launches carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command. The Defence Ministry said that the launch was carried out for a predetermined range and validated all operational parameters of the system.
IPRD-NAVY
The three-day apex-level regional strategic dialogue of the Indian Navy, the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue 2022 began in New Delhi on Wednesday. This is an annual international conference that seeks to foster exchange of ideas and promote deliberations on maritime issues relevant to the Indo-Pacific. Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said, India is well prepared to tackle threats in the maritime domain. He emphasised the need to increase the country's maritime capabilities, sustainable management of the nation’s oceanic resources and boosting military capabilities. Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar outlined the Indian Navy’s outreach in terms of fostering maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
MALAYSIA- ANWAR-NEW PM
Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in as the country's new Prime Minister on Thursday. The new leader was appointed by King Al-Sultan Abdullah, after elections over the weekend resulted in an unprecedented hung parliament. Neither Mr Anwar nor ex-premier Muhyiddin Yassin had won the simple majority needed to form a government. After speaking to several lawmaker, the constitutional monarch, King Abdullah gave consent to appoint the 75-year-old leader Anwar Ibrahim as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia . Mr Anwar was deputy prime minister in the 1990s and the official prime minister-in-waiting in 2018.
IRAN-INDIA
Foreign Office Consultations were held between India and Iran in New Delhi on Thursday. The Iranian delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Dr. Ali Bagheri Kani and the India side was led by Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
During the delegation level talks, both sides discussed the entire gamut of bilateral relations including political, economic, cultural and consular engagement. The two sides reiterated their commitment to continue cooperation for development of the Shahid Behesti terminal of the Chabahar Port. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues including Afghanistan.

India participated in the 22nd Council of Ministers's meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) held at Dhaka in Bangladesh on Thursday. The Indian delegation was led by Minister of State for External Affairs Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh.
During his remarks, Mr. Singh reaffirmed the country's strong commitment to strengthening IORA to promote peace, security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region as well as in the Indo-Pacific.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted India’s contribution to climate action in an article. Mr Guterres wrote in the article that everyone needs to make peace with nature, reduce our carbon footprints, and have a lifestyle that is compatible with a sustainable society and economy. The UN Chief, who came to India in October to launch a major national and global initiative ‘Mission LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment), wrote that this initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will mobilize citizens from all over world to understand that they have a role to play.
CHINA -COVID
China on Thursday reported more than 31600 new COVID cases, highest tally since the pandemic began in late 2019. This surge also surpassed the previous high seen in April during the months long painful Shanghai lockdown, putting pressure on the country’s increasingly unpopular zero-COVID approach of quarantine and mass testing. The southern city of Guangzhou, the national capital of Beijing and the southwestern municipality of Chongqing have been the hardest hit in the latest Covid wave. Nearly all of China’s 31 province-level regions have reported new Covid infections.
SL- CENTRAL BANK
The central bank of Sri Lanka has kept the lending rates unchanged at 15.5 percent following a monetary policy meeting on Thursday. More from our Colombo correspondent.
"Keeping the lending rates unchanged, the central bank of Sri Lanka said that the prevailing tight monetary policy stance is necessary to rein in any underlying demand pressures in the economy. The bank has so far hiked rates by a record 950 basis points this year to battle runaway inflation in the island.
Meanwhile the inflation rate has eased to 70.6 percent in October after hitting a record high of 73.7 percent in the previous month. J&K-WEAPONS RECOVERY
In Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, arms and some cash have been recovered by Police from a field in Samba district on Thursday. AIR Jammu correspondent reports that following reliable inputs about a suspicious package near Channi Manhasan in Vijaypur, the Police rushed to the spot. Upon inspection, one IED, two pistols, four magazines, several batteries, a watch and a cash of five lakh rupees were recovered from the package.
Additional SP, Samba, Surinder Chaudhary said, it is a case of a drone dropping from Pakistan to smuggle in weapons and cash for carrying out terror activities in J&K. Officials said there was a movement of a drone that was spotted in the area. Searches are being conducted nearby as more drone droppings are suspected.

In Pakistan, Lieutenant General Asim Munir was appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff on Thursday. He will take over from outgoing General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who will retire later this month after a six-year term.
Pakistan's Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff.
TORTOISES AND TURTLE CONSERVATION
India reiterated its commitment on conserving tortoises and fresh water turtles in the country during the 19th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 19) at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said this in a press release. The 19th Meeting is being held at Panama City from 14th November to 25th November 2022.
At CoP 19, India’s proposal for induction of fresh water turtle Batagur kachuga earned wide support of the parties in CoP 19 of CITES. It was widely appreciated by the parties and well accepted when introduced.

In the FIFA World Cup, Switzerland defeated Cameroon, 1-0 in their opening game of Group G at Al Janoub Stadium, Qatar. Cameroon started the game on a dominating note with some really good attack in display. While, Switzerland too had their chances at the start but none of the sides could score any goal in the first half of the game. However in the second half, Breel Embolo scored a lone goal of the game to registered Switzerland easy win.
BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP
Young Indian boxers continued their dominance at the IBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022 as seven of them stormed into the finals after their stunning victories in La Nucia, Spain.
Youth Asian champions Vanshaj and Vishwanath Suresh, along with Ashish marched ahead in the men’s semifinals whereas Kirti (81kg), Bhawna Sharma (48kg), Devika Ghorpade (52kg) and Ravina (63kg) progressed in the women’s section.

The Sensex on Thursday closed at record high. Both indices rose more than one percent. Extending gains for the third straight session. The rupee strengthened 22 paise against the US dollar. A report from the business desk-
The Sensex finished at 62,273 points climbing 762 points. The Nifty also surged 217 points to settle at 18,484. At global stock markets, Asian shares touched a two-month high and the dollar slipped towards a three-month low. The share indices rose after Federal Reserve meeting minutes pointed to a slower pace of U.S. interest rate rises from next month. South Korea’s KOSPI and Japan's NIKKEI-225, both gained one percent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 0.8 percent. On the other hand, Singapore’s Straits Times slipped marginally by 0.1 percent and China’s Shanghai Composite index fell 0.3 percent. European shares were up in intra-day trade. Oil declined half a percent to around two-month low. The crude prices fell as the Group of Seven (G7) nations' proposed range for a price cap on Russian oil was higher than current trading levels, alleviating concerns over tight supply. Brent crude was trading at 85 dollars per barrel. Back Home, At the Multi Commodity Exchange, Gold futures for December was trading at 52,725 rupees per ten grams. Silver futures for December was trading at 62,205 rupees per kilogram, when reports last came in. In the forex market, the rupee strengthened 22 paise against the US dollar.
