"Swachh Bharat Mission is a country-wide campaign launched by the Union Government in 2014 to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management. Phase 1 of the campaign lasted till October 2019. Phase 2 is being implemented between 2020-21 and 2024-25 to help cement the work of Phase 1. Launching the Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, aim of this campaign is to achieve the vision of a ‘Clean India’ by 2nd October 2019. He said, a clean India would be the best tribute India could pay to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150 birth anniversary.
Prime Minister Modi led a cleanliness pledge at India Gate, which about thirty lakh government employees across the country joined. While leading the mass movement for cleanliness, Mr Modi exhorted people to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a clean and hygienic India. Mahatma Gandhi used to say that Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
By inviting people to participate in the drive, the Swachhta Abhiyan has turned into a National Movement. Under the mission, all villages, Gram Panchayats, Districts, States and Union Territories in India declared themselves "open-defecation free" (ODF) by 2 October 2019, by constructing over 100 million toilets in rural India. To ensure that the open defecation free behaviours are sustained, no one is left behind, and that solid and liquid waste management facilities are accessible, the Mission has moved towards the Phase II of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen). ODF Plus activities under Phase II of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) aim to reinforce ODF behaviours and focus on providing interventions for the safe management of solid and liquid waste in villages. The Goal of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 is to make the cities completely free of garbage. In the journey of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, there is a mission, there is respect, there is dignity, and there is also unmatched love for the motherland."
