Polling to elect a new Vice President will be held today. The polling will take place at the Parliament House between 10 am and 5 pm. Mr Jagdeep Dhankar is the NDA candidate, while Ms Margaret Alva is the Opposition candidate for the Vice Presidential Election.
"The Vice President is elected by the members of the Electoral College consisting of the members of both houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The total number of electors are 788 Members of Parliament. It includes 543 elected Members of the Lok Sabha and 233 elected Members of the Rajya Sabha as well as 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers on Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in New Delhi today. The meeting will be held at Rashtrapati Bhawan at 4:30 pm. India is celebrating 75 years of its Independence and the government is organizing Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign in this regard. Under the campaign, a series of programmes is being organised across the country including Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. We spoke to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur about today's meeting of CMs and Deputy CMs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the 7th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog at Rashtrapati Bhawan Cultural Centre, New Delhi tomorrow. The meeting will pave the way for synergies towards a new era of collaboration and co-operation between Centre and States and Union Territories.
The agenda of the meeting includes crop diversification and achieving self-sufficiency in oilseeds, pulses and agri-communities, implementation of the National Education Policy and urban governance. The Governing Council Meeting will endeavour to finalise a roadmap and outcome-oriented action plan on each of the themes.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has hit out at Congress for its protest by party leaders in black clothes alleging that this shows their opposition to the Ram Mandir construction. Talking to media in New Delhi, Mr Shah said that the Congress's protest over issues of action of Enforcement Directorate and price rise are only excuses. He said, the day of August 5 was chosen for protest by Congress leaders because the foundation of Shri Ram Janambhoomi was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same day.
Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has said that the target of setting up 1.50 lakh Ayushman Bharat - Health and Wellness Centres ( AB- HWC) will become functional by December of this year. Replying to a debate over a private member legislation namely the Right to Health Bill 2021 in the Rajya Sabha yesterday, Dr Mandaviya said that out of the total target of setting up 1.5 lakh such Centres, one lakh 22 thousand are now functional.
Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has said, the government has set a target to increase the Health budget of the country to 2.5 per cent of the GDP, which is currently at 1.9 per cent. Giving details about the allocations made in the Health budget, he said, in 2014 the total health budget was to the tune of 33 thousand crore rupees which was increased continuously and now it has reached 83 thousand crore rupees in 2022-23.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all Universities and Colleges to observe August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. They have been asked to organise programmes and seminars to commemorate the sufferings and sacrifices of millions of Indians during the partition in 1947. UGC chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar said that it is important to encourage students, staff and faculty members to participate in the observance of "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day" in large numbers. Prime Minister Modi had last year announced that August 14 will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of people, saying the pain of partition can never be forgotten.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has informed that the Common University Entrance Test, CUET-UG scheduled for today has been postponed at 53 centres across 13 states due to administrative and technical reasons. The NTA in a statement said, the postponed exam will now be held between 12th and 14th August and the same Admit Card will remain valid. The affected candidates have already been infomed about the postponement of exam through SMS and E-mail.
A special PMLA court in Kolkata has sent former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee and his associate Arpita Mukherjee to 14-day judicial remand till August 18 in connection with in SSC recruitment scam. Both the accused had been in Enforcement Directorate's custody since their arrest on July 23. The ED is investigating into the money trail in connection with illegal appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff in West Bengal government sponsored and aided schools.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has constituted an expert group of Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) to boost overseas flows into the country. The FPI Advisory Committee (FAC) will be chaired by former Chief Economic Adviser KV Subramanian and consists of 14 other members representing foreign banks, stock exchanges depositories and RBI. The FAC has been tasked with advising on issues related to investments and operations of FPIs in the financial markets, including measures to facilitate ease of doing business by FPIs in India. The committee will review investment avenues available for FPIs and to advise on feasibility of new investment avenues.

At least 10 people including a top commander of a Palestinian militant group were killed by Israeli air strikes in the Ghaza strip yesterday. According to local health officials, dozens of others were injured in the air strikes. The Israeli Prime Miniter said that the operation followed an immediate threat by Palestinian Islamic Jihad after the arrest of one of its members this week. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad group fired more than 100 rockets into Israel in an initial response.

In men's freestyle wrestling, Bajrang Punia won gold by defeating Canadian Lachlan Mcneil 9-2 in 65kg category while Deepak Punia clinched the gold by defeating Pakistan's Muhammad Inam 3-0 in 86kg category. Mohit Grewal won bronze by defeating Jamacian Aaron Johnson in 125kg category.
In Women's Freestyle wrestling, Sakshi Malik bagged gold beating Canadian Godinez Gonzalez by fall in 62kg category while Anshu Malik settled for a silver after losing 3-7 to Nigeria's Folasade Adekuoroye in 57 kg category. India lifted the SAFF Under-20 football championship trophy by defeating Bangladesh 5-2 in the final at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha last night.
