Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New Delhi last night after participating in the Quad Leaders' Summit as part of his two-day visit to Japan. Besides Mr Modi, the Quad Summit was attended by US President Joe Biden, and Prime Ministers of Japan and Australia. During the summit, the leaders reiterated their shared commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and the importance of upholding the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and peaceful resolution of disputes. They exchanged perspectives on developments in the Indo-Pacific and the conflict in Europe. He participated in the event to launch the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity and chaired a business roundtable in Tokyo. The Prime Minister also interacted with members of the Indian community.
Meanwhile, Quad leaders have unequivocally condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations. In a joint statement, Quad leaders said that there could be no justification for acts of terror. They also reiterated their condemnation of terrorist attacks, including Pathankot and 26/11 Mumbai attacks perpetrated by Pakistan-based terror outfits.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said that there was an excellent warmth between the leaders during the summit. He added that they also held productive and meaningful discussions that were marked by a cooperative and constructive agenda.
Mr Kwatra said Quad leaders focussed on action-oriented cooperation among Quad partners and the countries of the Indo-Pacific for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific aimed at peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
The Centre has allowed import of 20 Lakh Metric Tonnes each of Crude Soyabean Oil and Crude Sunflower Seed Oil per year for a period of two years at a nil rate of customs duty and Agricultural Infrastructure and Development Cess. This will provide significant relief to the consumers. The exemption from customs duty and Agricultural Infrastructure and Development Cess will be effective from today. The exemption will help cool domestic prices and control inflation.
The Government has announced a curb on export of sugar beyond 10 million tonnes during this sugar season ending September. The government said this has been done considering the high increase in exports of the sweetener in the past few months.
As per the new guideline, sugar mills and exporters need to take approvals in the form of Export Release Orders (EROs) from the Food Ministry. Sugar exports have been allowed up to May 31st without any ERO or approval. For exports between June 1 and October 30, ERO will be required. India consumes around 24 lakh tonnes of sugar every month.
The Union Government has launched the Eighth edition of Swachh Survekshan - SS-2023 under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0. Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Manoj Joshi launched it at a virtual event in New Delhi yesterday. Designed with the theme of ‘Waste to Wealth’ as its driving philosophy, Swachh Survekshan- 2023 is curated towards achieving circularity in waste management. The survey would give priority to the principle of 3Rs - Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
Speaking at the launch event, Mr Manoj Joshi said that the Swachh Survekshan has developed into an inspiration tool, rather than being just an assessment tool. This largest survey undertaken anywhere has brought about substantive changes at the ground level, with cities performing well having a sense of pride.

In Chennai, the Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation five projects worth over 2,900 crore rupees. The 75-kilometre long Madurai-Teni Railway Gauge Conversion Project, built at a project cost of over 500 crore rupees, will facilitate access and give a boost to tourism in the region.

A Mohali Court has remanded former Punjab Health Minister Dr Vijay Singla to police custody till the 27th of this month. He was produced in the court following his arrest by anti corruption wing of Punjab police. Earlier in the day, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann dropped Singla from his Cabinet over corruption charges levelled against him. Revealing the corruption charges against Mr Singla, the Chief Minister recommended the Police to register a case against him.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has summoned Congress MP Karti Chidambaram to join the probe in connection with a fresh case lodged against him and others for allegedly helping Chinese nationals getting visas by flouting rules. He has been summoned to appear before the probe agency at 11 AM today at the CBI headquarters in New Delhi.
Karti's Charted Accountant S. Bhaskararaman is currently on custodial remand of the CBI. There is a possibility that Karti might be confronted with him. The CBI has recovered 65,000 emails in the matter, which will be used as evidences.
According to the FIR, a Mansa (Punjab) based private firm, Talwandi Sabo Power Limited, took help of a middleman and allegedly paid 50 lakh rupees to get the visa issued for Chinese nationals, so that the firm completes a project before the deadline. The private firm was in the process of establishing a 1,980 megawatt thermal power plant the work for which was outsourced to a Chinese company. The project was running behind its schedule.
The Supreme Court has directed the Jharkhand High Court to first consider the maintainability of a PIL seeking probe by CBI and Enforcement Directorate into the mining lease granted to Chief Minister Hemant Soren by himself. A bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and Bela M Trivedi directed the Jharkhand High Court to first consider the maintainability of the PIL pending before the High court. The apex court was hearing a plea by the Jharkhand government, challenging the May 13 and May 17 orders of the High Court in the PIL. Jharkhand government and Chief Minister Soren have sought dismissal of the PIL on the ground of maintainability.
The PIL seeks probes by CBI and ED into the mining lease that was granted to the Jharkhand Chief Minister and some shell companies operated by his family members and associates.

Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi has said that India with its diverse cultural expression ensures to provide a platform to the BRICS countries to familiarize cultural values through exchange programmes. She was speaking at the 7th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting yesterday hosted by China through video conference. Ms Lekhi said India believes in diversity of cultural heritage and intercultural dialogue. In the United States, a teenage gunman has killed 18 children and three teachers and injured others at a Texas elementary school in Uvalde. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said that the 18-year old gunman has been killed. The pupils were in second, third, and fourth grades - meaning aged between 7 and 10. It is the deadliest shooting at a US grade school since the shocking attack at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, almost a decade ago. And it came just 10 days after a gunman in body armor killed 10 Black shoppers and workers at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
Abbott said the gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde with a handgun and possibly a rifle. Officials did not immediately reveal a motive, but the Governor identified the assailant as Salvador Ramos. Abbott said the shooter was likely killed by police officers but that the events were still being investigated. The school district’s police chief, Pete Arredondo, said that the attacker acted alone. Robb Elementary School has an enrollment of just under 600 students.
US President Joe Biden has ordered flags flown at half-staff until sunset daily until May 28 in observance of the tragedy. He delivered an emotional call for new restrictions on firearms after a gunman opened fire at a Texas elementary school. He asked when in God’s name, we are going to stand up to the gun lobby? He said this at the White House shortly after returning from a five-day trip to Asia.
In Brazil, at least 21 people were shot dead in a Rio de Janeiro slum during a police raid to capture the leaders of a drug-trafficking organization. Military police said they came under gunfire as they approached the northern Rio slum called Vila Cruzeiro with the mission of locating and arresting criminals. Seven injured people were taken to hospital, including a policeman. Residents said 19 schools in the area were closed because of the gunfire.
World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has been re-elected for the second term. In a tweet, the WHO said, the World Health Assembly Member states re-elected Dr Tedros to serve a second five-year term as the Director-General of the WHO. His new mandate officially commences on 16th August, this year. His re-election was confirmed during the 75th World Health Assembly in Geneva. He was the sole candidate. Dr Tedros was first elected in 2017.
In IPL cricket, Gujarat Titans stormed into the final, after beating Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in Qualifier 1 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata last night. Put into bat first, Rajasthan posted 188 runs for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 20 overs with the help of Jos Buttler's 89 off 56 and Skipper Sanju Samson's 47 runs off 26.
In reply, Gujarat overhauled the target, losing three wickets in 19.3 overs riding on David Miller's unbeaten 68 off 38 balls and skipper Hardik Pandya's not out 40 off 27 balls.
Rajasthan Royals will now face the winner of the Eliminator match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the hope to enter the final of the tournament. Lucknow will take on Bangalore today at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata at 7:30 pm.
In the Men's Asia Cup Hockey Championship, defending champions India went down 2-5 to Japan in their second match at Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday.
After this defeat India are now placed at third position in Group A. In their opening pool match on Monday, India drew 1-1 against Pakistan.
