Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. This day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face. This year’s edition focuses on “International cooperation for developing countries to reduce their disaster risk and disaster losses.”

The United Nations has said that disasters impact low- and middle-income countries disproportionately. It said that poverty and hunger not be eradicated if investments in disaster risk reduction is not stepped up. The United Nations added that international cooperation for developing countries through Official Development Aid and capacity building is essential to boost disaster resilience.
