Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh celebrate Lohri with bonfires

In Punjab, this harvest festival is marked by eating sheaves of roasted corn from the new harvest and eating Kheer of sugarcane juice from the January sugarcane harvest.
Sugarcane products such as gurh and gajak are central to Lohri celebrations, as are nuts which are harvested in January.
In the evening bonfires were lit with full devotion to say goodbye to coldest days.
AIR Correspondent reports, in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh the bonfires of Lohri are being seen everywhere. The people are celebrating the seasonal as well as harvesting festival of undivided Punjab with great zeal. Everybody is in a joyous mood and enjoying the groundnuts, sheaves of roasted corn, gajjak, rewri and other items made of jaggery, which were offered in the sacred bonfire, lit in the evening. People are dancing to the beats of drums.
In Punjab, today Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh launched a programme 'Dhian Di Lohri', which will continue throughout the month. Today in various institutions and hospitals Dhian Di Lohri was celebrated and girl students and newborn babies were offered gifts in the form of Lohri.
