The Odisha government has said that the decision on the merger of schools having low enrolment is intended to improve the quality of education. Participating in a discussion on a motion on closure of schools in the State assembly today, the government clarified that it was not closure but only merger of schools to further strengthen the educational ecosystem.

Speaking to the media outside the house, the School and Mass Education Minister, Sameer Ranjan Dash said that a total of 7,772 primary and upper primary schools with less than 25 students each had been planned to be merged with nearby schools. He said that there are more than 14,000 schools in the State which have a student strength of less than 40 each. However, the government had planned to merge 6,048 schools with less than 20 students each and 1,724 schools with less than 25 students each.

He added that the exact number of schools that may face merger will now be decided in accordance with the new parameters of student strength as agreed to by the government in the assembly today. He said, only those schools with less than 20 students each in non-scheduled areas and 15 each in scheduled areas will face merger while still co-opting other local issues like natural barriers. The issue has created a ruckus in the State assembly yesterday leading to multiple adjournments with the opposition demanding the total scrapping of the proposal.
