Bangladesh celebrated Eid-Ul-Azha on Wednesday in the shadow of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country for the second consecutive year. Despite the relaxation given in the lockdown since July 15, the festival was observed in a sombre mood with several health guidelines in place across the country. There was gloom in thousands of families who lost their near and dear ones to the coronavirus as well as those who are suffering economically due to the effect of the pandemic.

Eid congregations were not held in open spaces this year too under the directive of the government to check the spread of the virus. However, five Eid congregations were held at the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka. The festivities were lacking as the people did not hug each other or shake hands in view of the raging corona pandemic in the country.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in their messages on the occasion called upon people to observe the health guidelines like wearing of masks and maintaining social distance to fight the spread of corona in the country.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh reported 173 deaths and 7614 new corona positive cases in the last 24 hours on Wednesday. The death toll has gone up to 18,498 and the total number of infections to 11.36 lakh with the active number of cases reported to be more than 1.56 lakh.

The positivity rate went up further to 30.48 percent which is the highest since July 12.
