Cyclone Damien lashes northwestern Australia

In Australia, tropical cyclone Damien lashed northwestern region's resource-rich Pilbara today. It forced locals to heed a code red emergency warning and hunker down indoors.

The category three storm brought winds of 195 kilometres per hour sending debris into air, knocking over trees and ripping roofs off sheds.

The Bureau of Meteorology said Damien has brought very destructive winds and very heavy rainfall. However, it said, cyclone Damien has not yet strengthened to a category four storm on the five-point scale as had been feared.
