Bangladesh receives 2 million doses of COVID 19 vaccine from Serum Institute of India

Bangladesh received 2 million doses of the COVID 19 vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (SII) on Tuesday. This is the second consignment of the vaccine from the SII as part of the tripartite deal with Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and the government of Bangladesh to supply 30 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID 19 vaccine produced by it.
Earlier, 5 million doses of the vaccine was received by Bangladesh on 25 January from the SII. The Govt of India has also gifted 2 million doses of the COVID 19 vaccine to Bangladesh. With the latest consignment from India, Bangladesh has received 9 million doses of the vaccine produced by the SII.
The nationwide vaccination programme against the Coronavirus in Bangladesh started on 7th Feb after being inaugurated on 27th January by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After the first few days, the vaccination programme has picked up speed in Bangladesh. On Monday more than 2.34 lakh people received the COVID 19 vaccine in the country taking the total number of people vaccinated till Monday over 20.82 lakh.
The government has planned to vaccinate 6 million people in a month. More than 1000 hospitals and health centres are engaged in the country to conduct the vaccination programme.
Government of Bangladesh has also initiated the special vaccination drive for the diplomats and officials of the foreign missions in Bangladesh. The programme was launched on 10th February at the Sheikh Russel National Gastroliver Institute in Dhaka. Earlier, Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen had said that the government will also facilitate the process of coronavirus vaccination of foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
