19th Dhaka International Film Festival to pay tribute to Satyajit Ray

The 19th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) will be inaugurated on 16th January. The film festival this year is dedicated to the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Announcing this on Thursday at a press conference in Dhaka, the festival Director Ahmed Muztaba Zamal said that 225 films from 73 countries will be screened during the 9 day long festival between 16-24 January. The festival will have 10 categories including Cinema of the world, Children’s Film, Women Film Maker’s section, Spiritual Films, Bangladesh Panorama, Tribute and Retrospective among others.
A special category on the leaders who changed the world has been introduced in the festival. It will show films relating to the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mahatma Gandhi, Lenin, Yaser Arafat, Fidel Castro and others during the festival.
Spring Blossom, a film from France, directed by Suzanne Lindon will be the opening film of the festival.
The tribute section of the festival will be dedicated to the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray to commemorate his birth centenary. The festival will also hold seminars and discussions around the work and life of Satyajit Ray. The section will showcase Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Jalsaghar, Sonar Kella and Hirok Rajar Deshe directed by Satyajit Ray.
In the retrospective section, the festival will feature films of Iranian filmmaker Pouran Derakhshandeh. A special award will be given for women film-makers in the documentary and feature film category by the international jury.
About 123 films of the festival will also be shown on the OTT platform, affording people an opportunity to watch films from the comfort of their homes.
The festival will be inaugurated by the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen as the Chief Guest. High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami will be the special guest on the occasion.
