Attempt to murder case: Kerala HC suspends conviction, sentence of former Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal

The Kerala High Court today stayed a lower court verdict that convicted former Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal ( NCP) and three  others to ten years rigorous imprisonment in an attempt to murder case that took place during the run up to the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas suspended the conviction and sentence of the District and Sessions Court, Kavaratti, in a writ appeal moved by Mohammed Faizal.

The Kavaratti court had sentenced the former Lakshadweep MP and others in connection with the attempt to murder Mohammed Salih, son-in-law of former Union Minister PM Sayeed. The lower court had also imposed a fine of one lakh rupees each on the accused.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat had disqualified Mohammed Faizal, following which  the Election Commission announced bypoll to the Lakshadweep parliamentary constituency, scheduled to take place on February 27.

Mohammed Faizal has  moved the Supreme Court against the Election Commission's announcement to hold bye election in Lakshadweep.
