6 people killed during massive clashes in Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon

At least 6 people were killed and several injured during massive clashes in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon yesterday. Fighting erupted after a ceasefire in the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp on the outskirts of the southern port city of Sidon fell apart. According to reports, many people have taken shelter in nearby mosques, schools, and the Sidon municipality building. The director of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon UNRWA informed, it has relocated some 1,200 people to schools in the area from a mosque near the camp’s entrance. Since last week, the refugee camp has been shaked by violence, with members of the Fatah movement which governs the camp, fighting armed fighters. Fatah and its allies had planned to crack down on suspects accused of assassinating its military leader in the camp in late July.

According to the United Nations, Ein el-Hilweh is one of 12 refugee camps distributed around Lebanon is home to approximately 55,000 registered refugees.
