In Jammu and Kashmir, the ski resort of Gulmarg is set to host the second leg of the fifth edition of Khelo India Winter Games 2025 from today, with fresh snowfall lending a picturesque backdrop to the much-awaited event. The first-leg winners from the Union Territory of Ladakh will strive to retain their overall title. The formal inaugural session will commence around 6:30 in the evening, featuring a beam light show, a night ski demonstration by skiers, a ‘Mashaal’ show showcasing ski skills, an LED Trion dance, and a fireworks display.
The three-day event will witness the participation of 800 athletes, competing in four key disciplines: Alpine Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, Snowboarding, and Nordic Skiing. Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinhawill attend the inaugural session. Hundreds of participants, along with officials, media personnel, and volunteers, are arriving at the snow-covered venue, now a vibrant hub for winter sports.
Security agencies have put in place robust security arrangements including strict access control, CCTV surveillance, anti-sabotage checks, besides regular patrolling in and around key venues, accommodation facilities, and transit routes. As a prelude to the main competition, an all-women Ski Run was held to mark International Women’s Day, with female skiers from across India taking to the slopes in a celebration of empowerment and sporting excellence. The first leg of the games was successfully held in Ladakh from 23rd to 27th of January, where ice hockey and ice-skating events took place.
