At least 11 people were killed and over two dozen injured when a car drove into a crowd celebrating the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, Canada.
The suspect, 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, was arrested at the scene with the help of bystanders. He has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder so far, and more charges are expected. Police said he has a history of mental health issues and previous contact with police and healthcare services.
Meanwhile, some victims are still unidentified. The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has set up a 24-hour assistance centre at Douglas Park Community Centre for people looking for missing loved ones. Witnesses and anyone with photos or videos of the incident are urged to contact the police.
Lapu Lapu Day, honouring a Filipino hero who resisted Spanish colonisation, was officially recognised in British Columbia in 2023 and is an important celebration for Vancouver’s Filipino community.
