  • Election Commission curtails campaigning in West Bengal by one day; State Principal Secretary Home and ADG (CID) relieved from their posts.

In an unprecedented move, Election Commission has cut short the campaigning period in nine Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal by one day in view of yesterday's violence in Kolkata. The Commission has directed that after 10 pm tomorrow, there will be no public meetings or rallies, display of election matter and other election campaign related activities. The campaigning for the seats was scheduled to end at 5 pm on Friday. Briefing media in New Delhi, Deputy Election Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kumar said, the order will be effective for all constituencies of the state.

"Commission hereby directs that no person shall convene, hold, attend, join or address any public meeting or procession in connection with an election in nine Parliamentary constituencies from  10 pm on 16/5/2019 and till the conclusion of  poll on 19/5/2019 ."

The Deputy Election Commissioner said, this is probably for the first time such step has been taken by the poll body in exercise of its powers under Article 324. Mr Kumar said, the Commission expresses deep anguish at the vandalism done to the statue of social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

 The Election Commission has relieved State Principal Secretary (Home) and ADG (CID) from their posts. Deputy Election Commissioner Sudeep Jain said,

"Shri Rajiv Kumar IPS ADG CID stands relieved and attached to the ministry of home affairs New Delhi, he shall report at the ministry of home affairs by 10 am on 16th May, also Shri Atri Bhattacharya as Principal Secretary home government of West Bengal stands relieved from its current charge Immediately."


 Senior BJP Leader and Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has charged West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chief Ms. Mamata Banerjee for indulging in politics of violence. Addressing an election rally at Taki in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal this afternoon, Mr. Modi said that Ms. Banerjee had threatened BJP of revenge and yesterday's incidents during the road show of Party President Amit Shah happened within 24 hours of that statement by Ms Banerjee. Mr. Modi said that the violence reflects that the TMC Chief is scared of seeing people’s support to the BJP. The Prime Minister said,

"दीदी अपने अहंकार में आप क्या-क्या कर रही हैं। यहां भाजपा नेताओं को रैली नहीं करने दी जा रही है, वोटरों को वोट नहीं डालने दिया जा रहा, उम्मीदवारों पर हमले किए जा रहे, यहां तक कि नेताजी सुभाष चन्द्र बोस के प्रपौत्र को भी आपके गुंडों ने नहीं छोड़ा। दीदी आप बंगाल को किस युग में ले जाने पर तुली हुई हैं।  "

Primer Minister said, the BJP led Government will identify the infiltrators and give citizenship to all minority refugees.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that yesterday’s violent incident was pre-planned by the BJP. She criticized the BJP for damaging the statue of Social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. Our Kolkata Correspondent reports that several organizations condemned the incident in Vidyasagar College in Kolkata.

"Educationists, Intellectuals and cross section of people have condemned the damaging of Vidya Sagar’s statue in educational institution. Opposition Left Front took out a rally in Kolkata protesting the incident. Teachers of Vidya Sagar College also sat on dharna condemning the incident. The Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the episode as pre- planned by the BJP. On the other hand the BJP alleged that the Trinamool Congress backed hooligans attacked them during the road show. Senior leaders of various political parties held multiple rallies at different places to woo the voters.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi was campaigning in Punjab today. Addressing a rally at Bargari in Faridkot, Mr Gandhi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi waived the loans of thousands crores of rupees of big industrialists but not waived the loans of farmers. He said that in Congress-ruled states, the loans of farmers have been waived. Mr Gandhi also talked about the Nyay scheme.  

"72 हजार रुपये साल का, जिसकी भी आमदनी 12 हजार रुपये प्रति महीने से कम की है, उसको मिलेगा। जो भी गरीब लोग है आपके बैंक अकाउंट में जाएगा। जैसे ही जाएगा आप लोग मा खरीदना शुरू करोगे, वैसे ही आपकी दुकानें चालू हो जाएंगी। डिमांड में पैसा होगा, जैसे ही डिमांड में पैसा होगा, तो लुधियाना की सबकी सब छोटी, मीडिलक्लास फैक्ट्रियां चालू हो जाएंगी, युवाओं को रोजगार मिलेगा।"

Speaking at a public meeting at Mullanpur in Ludhiana later in the day, Mr Gandhi said that the demonetization ruined the industry in Ludhiana. He said, unemployment, farmers and industry are big issues at present.

Our Uttar Pradesh correspondent is telling us about various rallies and road shows taking place in the state:

"Congress general secretary and in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today led a road show in Varanasi the constituency from where Senior BJP Leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking re election. In rallies of SP-BSP-RLD alliance at Deoria and Mau, BSP Chief Mayawati and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav attacked Congress and BJP both. Mayawati said that both parties will be defeated in this election because of their anti people policies. Senior BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, Kalraj Mishra, Yogi Adityanath, Keshav Prasad Maurya, Dinesh Sharma, Manoj Tiwari and Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua also campaigned in different constituencies.  Sushil Chandra Tiwari, AIR News Varanasi."

Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also addressed an election rally at Dhar and Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh, where he said that national security is paramount for BJP. Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh also addressed a public meeting in Dhar district today.

BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani addressed a rally at Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, while Congress leader and minister in  Punjab government Navjot Singh Sidhu held a public meeting in Bilaspur.


In Assam, a suspected grenade blast has been reported at Zoo Road in capital Guwahati a short while ago. Eight  persons have been injured. They  have been admitted to Guwahati Medical college and hospital. Police said that the blast has been reported in a vehicle. Senior police officials have reached the spot. Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal has condemned the blast.

Banned outfit ULFA ( Independence ) has claimed the responsibility for the blast. Further details are awaited.


The India Meteorological Department, IMD, has forecast that Southwest Monsoon will hit Kerala on 6th June, five days after its normal onset date. This marks the start of a rainy season over the region where from it progresses northward.

The IMD said, conditions are becoming favourable for advance of southwest monsoon over the southern part of Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal during May 18-19.


The annual Kailash Manasarovar Yatra will be held from 8th June to 8th of September. There will be 18 batches consisting of 60 Yatris via the Lipulekh route, and 10 batches consisting of 50 Yatris via the Nathu La route which is fully motorable, and involves very little trekking.

This year 2996 applicants had successfully registered on-line at the website for the Yatra, which includes 2256 male applicants, and 740 female applicants.

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale today conducted the computerized draw for selection of Yatris who had registered for the Yatra.

Applicants can also login at the website kmy.gov.in to check the status of their selection, or through the helpline number 011-24300655.


 In Pakistan, the brother-in-law of proscribed Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed has been arrested for hate speech and criticising the government. Abdul Rehman Makki is the head of JuD's political and international affairs wing and in-charge of its charity Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation. He was arrested during a government crackdown against the outlawed organisations, under the Maintenance of Public Order Act. Makki is accused of hate speech against the crackdown and criticising steps taken by the government under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) guidelines.


Pakistan has decided not to lift its airspace ban for Indian flights till 30th of this month. The top officials of defence and aviation ministries held a meeting in Islamabad today to reconsider opening its airspace for Indian flights and decided to continue the ban. Pakistan fully closed its airspace after an Indian Air Force strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camp in Balakot on February 26th.

However, Pakistan opened its airspace for all flights except for New Delhi, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur on March 27th this year.


China has broadened its block of online encyclopedia Wikipedia to include all language editions. According to a report by the Open Observatory of Network Interference, China started blocking all language editions of Wikipedia last month. Previously, most editions of Wikipedia besides the Chinese language version, which was reportedly blocked in 2015 were available.

China's online censorship apparatus dubbed the 'Great Firewall' blocks a large number of foreign sites in the country, such as Google, Facebook and The New York Times.

The India Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival 2019 was inaugurated today by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare. The Pavilion has been set up to showcase Indian cinema across linguistic, cultural and regional diversity. A special IFFI poster marking its Golden Jubilee Edition was also released, along with a comprehensive Film Guide to showcase the importance of the film ecosystem in India.

In his address, Mr Khare spoke about the growing importance of regional cinema in the country, increasing role of states in giving incentive to shoot films and the increasing focus on technology like Animation and Virtual Reality.


Benchmark indices today resumed their downward trend as Sensex and Nifty lost around 0.6 percent. Benchmark stocks declined as investors took money off the table amid global trade tensions and cautious approach due to general elections


"Sensex at Bombay Stock Exchange declined 204 points to end at 37,115. Nifty at National Stock Exchange also fell 65 points to settle at 11,157.  The rupee today appreciated by 10 paise to close at 70 rupees 34 paise against the US dollar, marking the second straight session of gain. And Gold prices today dropped by 135 rupees to 33,260 rupees per 10 gram in the national capital. Silver prices also fell by 100 rupees to 38,200 rupees per kg. Croatian World Cupper Igor Stimac has been appointed Indian football team head coach for a two-year term. The national team has been without a coach since the departure of Stephen Constantine in January, following the creditable show at the AFC Asian Cup. The appointment was made by the All India Football Federation's Executive Committee today.

The 51-year-old Stimac, who was part of Croatia's 1998 World Cup squad that finished third in France, has over 18 years of coaching experience.


India's Kynan Chenai and Prithviraj Tondaiman shot two perfect rounds of 25 each to lead the 109-strong qualification field in the men's trap shooting competition of ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Changwon, Korea today.

With three more rounds to be played tomorrow before the top six go through to the medal round, India will feel they are in a strong position to clinch final berths.

Kynan and Prithviraj shared the lead with only two other shooters from Great Britain and Kazakhstan.
